Insurance and Cosmetic Dentistry
"Does insurance cover cosmetic procedures?"
Dr. Pang: Generally speaking, insurance companies don’t care how you look. So, I wouldn’t count on any insurance reimbursement. However, after 20 years of providing cosmetic dentistry, I have found that most cosmetic problems are also functional problems and health related. For example, if someone doesn’t like the way their front teeth are chipped or broken, chances are your dentist won’t like it either. Because the chipping leads to a higher risk of dental cavities and sensitivity because of the exposed dentin. Also, in most cases, the chipping is actually a sign of a more serious underlying bite problem. This is just one example of a perceived cosmetic concern actually being a more serious functional problem that affects your health in the long term.
